Video Talk:Showcase website
List of showcase websites removal
Back while this was still in usespace, the article creator asked for some help about the protocol for linking outside websites. At that time, I clearly explained that the list of showcase websites absolutely may not be in this article based solely upon the WP editor's opinion that they meet the definition of a showcase website. Such an analysis falls squarely under WP:OR, and thus is unacceptable. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:50, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
- IMHO the article is significantly impoverished without the table of examples. I recall asking what is the best way to cite examples and I think the conclusion was that the examples should have their own articles (of note) in order to appear in the list. I am currently working on this but it's quite a large undertaking.
- At this stage I would also like other opinions as to the differentiation between "original research" and the citing of relevant sources (websites in this case) as examples designed to clarify and confirm definitions put forward in the article. Cneeds (talk) 10:37, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- You need a references stating that they any example you use is a showcase website. Since the definition is not self-evident (i.e., everyone looking at a certain site would definitely agree on whether something is or isn't a showcase website), you need a source to verify that they meet that definition. Note that the source cannot be the site itself--it needs to be an independent source that verifies the categorization of that website in that way. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:23, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- In whose opinion is "the definition is not self-evident"? I suggest that anyone who understands the difference between the terms "Review website" and "Showcase website" would be able to quickly identify these types of websites. -- Preceding unsigned comment added by Cneeds (talk o contribs) 21:50, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Problem with the term
Uh, oh, i just started looking at refs, and noticed some other problems. For instance, the AHA website is not using the term "Showcase website". Rather, it's using the word "showcase" as a verb meaning "to highlight", so that title says, "'Best of the Web' Awards highlight museum web sites." I'm going to remove that line. Since many of the other sources are not online, can you please confirm on each one whether or not they actually use "showcase website" as a specific term? If they don't those claims should be removed. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:23, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Same for the Palestine Web Awards. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:24, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- In fact, at this point, I'm going to have to ask you for a quotation from each of the sources. I'm beginning to doubt that this is actually a term used in the books. For starters, please provide a specific quotation from the first source that provides a definition for the term "showcase website". If that one does not, then provide any of them that does. If you don't have one in the next few days, I will have to nominate this article for deletion. Qwyrxian (talk) 12:26, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- On Page 77 of 3G Marketing on the Internet: Third Generation Internet Marketing Strategies for Online Success, point 19 says "Your Web site can be used to showcase stuff! A Web site is far more engaging than a brochure will ever be, and you can do so much more with a Web site to help sell your products or services. Showcase your success stories and case studies in order to share them with the world."
- Not every reference contains the term "Showcase website" as not every reference is in place to do that. For example, the second reference is designed to amplify "idea generation, especially in collaborative environments". From where do you get the idea that EVERY reference must contain the term "Showcase website"?
- Actually I agree with you regarding the awards section. On reading through again I can see that my reasoning was a bit convoluted. But the concept of "showcase" goes hand in hand with accolades, kudos and, where available, awards. That's the main reason that people "showcase" stuff. IMHO the awards section is an essential part of the article. It would be better to ask the author (me) to create a stronger case rather than just simply deleting it. I believe that we are ALL here to better wikipedia and, from this perspective, I would appreciate a revision of your action. Cneeds (talk) 23:01, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- Please provide me even a single source that says there is a specific thing called a showcase website, and that the term is widely used across one industry or another. If you cannot, as far as I can tell, the concept is something entirely of your own creation. This is what Wikipedia calls original research. You must show that this idea, this term, this concept, have been discussed by multiple, independent, reliable sources. I absolutely believe that you are here to "better Wikipedia", however, based on this article and what you've said above, I also think that you don't actually understand how Wikipedia works. The only thing that Wikipedia is supposed to include is articles on things that have already been discussed by reliable sources, in detail. We are not a place for people to discuss ideas that they themselves have created. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:33, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- And to be more specific: if the source doesn't include the term "showcase website", how could we know that that is what they are talking about? Qwyrxian (talk) 23:34, 2 February 2012 (UTC)
- I quite agree, I probably don't understand how wikipedia works as well as you do as I probably haven't been around here as long. But I think that's all the more reason to give encouragement rather than the swift scissor treatment.
- I couldn't find a reference that says a showcase is a kind of website. Neither could I find a reference that says a car is a type of vehicle.
- A showcase website is a website by its own definition. There are hundreds, if not thousands of references and sites that fall into the term's ambit:
- Firstly here are the site references you deleted that are either showcase sites or that display showcase sites:
